    United Way of Metropolitan Dallas (UWMD) is seeking a Director of Executive and Development Communications to develop a broad range of strategic communications on behalf of the President and CEO and members of the senior leadership team.  The Director will work directly with the President and CEO and the Chief Development Officer to manage a communications strategy designed to engage and steward United Way’s key constituents.  The Director will prepare correspondence to internal and external stakeholders, assist with the preparation of speeches, reports, presentations, statements, articles and other materials as requested.  The Director of Executive and Development Communications will also serve as writer, editor, and project manager for print and electronic communications directly related to the organization’s fundraising and stewardship efforts, including funding proposals and grants, newsletter communications, donor media releases, correspondence and speech writing for members of the Senior Leadership Team.

    This position requires close collaboration with leaders and departments across the organization and the ability to work with a high degree of independence in a fast-paced environment.


    • Research and draft correspondence, letters, speeches, reports, presentations and other materials to support the communication priorities of the CEO. Work closely with the CEO and other senior leaders to gather information to synthesize and finalize drafts.
    • Ensure the accuracy of all facts and details in speeches, statements and quotes issued on behalf of the CEO and official statements on behalf of the CEO’s office; collaborate proactively and effectively with Resource Development and other parties inside and outside the organization related to the CEO’s written or spoken words, photos and videos and events.
    • Liaise with appropriate senior leaders as needed to inform and provide perspective to CEO communication efforts.
    • Define, adjust, and execute high-touch communication strategies for key donor/volunteer segments at all stages along the donor cycle.
    • Capture the personality, vision, and passion of the President and CEO for a variety of audiences.
    • Manage the development of the written content for marketing collateral and other projects for Community Impact and Resource Development.
    • Develop meaningful correspondence and acknowledgements for individual donors, corporations and foundations on behalf of members of the Senior Leadership Team.
    • Develop talking points and speeches for the President and CEO for both internal and external speaking engagements.
    • Partner with leaders and departments across the organization to create and execute copy for the Unite newsletter.
    • Partner with the organization’s public relations staff person to develop press releases for sponsors, donors, and other topics as the need arises. Ensure final copies are routed to donors, sponsors and other key stakeholders as necessary.
    • Produce compelling major gift proposals, including information obtained from both colleagues and research resources.
    • Work with the CDO to create content for internal and external audiences from the Board of Directors meetings.
    • Stay current with best practices, strategies, and industry standards related to email and social media communications.
    • Write and edit additional development-oriented copy as assigned.


    • Bachelor’s degree required, as well as 5 years professional experience in business or technical writing, communications, media relations, or related field. Experience in development writing preferred.
    • Superb writing capabilities, including an ability to write quickly, persuasively, clearly and in the CEO’s style on a wide variety of subjects related to the organization, at times on tight deadlines.
    • Ability and willingness to meet the CEO’s expectations for written style and content and to accept and respond to revisions and advice rapidly and effectively.
    • Strong editing and proofreading skills, with the ability to easily change writing styles to fit the audience and the voice of the piece.
    • Demonstrated ability to convey complex information in a clear and persuasive manner.
    • Knowledge of interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver messages—ability to interview, research and write compelling cases for support and communications to be delivered to potential donors in a variety of ways.
    • Experience in developing a plan to enhance communication between individuals and various entities. Exceptional interpersonal skills and a demonstrated success in interacting effectively with a wide scope of people at all levels.
    • Ability to quickly and effectively gather information by means of research and interviews, as well as organize information for effective verbal and visual presentation in PowerPoint decks, proposals and other communications materials.
    • Strong experience in speechwriting with the ability to translate complex concepts into clear, compelling language for multiple audiences.
    • Exceptional project management skills and an ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced, driven environment, implementing last-minute changes as needed.
    • Demonstrated attention to detail, creative, analytical and takes initiative.
    • Strong understanding of businesses and corporations combined with a fluency in topical news and culture.
    • Demonstrated interpersonal, communication, project, time management and analytical skills.
    • Experience working with outside vendors and independent contractors, including designers.
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required. Knowledge of Photoshop and InDesign a plus.
    • Familiarity with nonprofit fundraising is required.
