    The Vice President of Engagement (“VP”) is a strategic and motivated leader focused developing and leading the overall event and engagement strategy for United Way of Metropolitan Dallas (UWMD).  The VP will report to the Chief Development Officer and serve as a member of the Resource Development senior team, while collaborating with leaders and team members from all departments. Collaboration and partnership with the Community Impact (CI) team will be critical to the success of this position. The VP’s primary responsibility will be to develop and implement strategic volunteer and event strategies designed to engage companies and individuals in the work of United Way and its role in driving impact and building strong communities through its focus on education, financial stability, and health.  This role requires a strong understanding and innovative approach to events and volunteer engagement, knowledge of existing CSR initiatives of our corporate partners, exemplary event programming, and the ability to design and implement comprehensive, year-round engagement opportunities that provide corporate and community partners with a full suite of opportunities and professional services throughout the year. The ideal candidate to assume this role must possess strong skills and competencies including: ability to work independently; entrepreneurial in nature, professional experience with CSR, corporate philanthropic initiatives or workplace engagement efforts; diplomacy, flexibility, accountability, and the ability and commitment to empower and mentor their colleagues.

     

    Responsibilities

    Engagement and Events

    • Leads creation of a cross-functional strategic plan focused on corporate and individual engagement through events and volunteer opportunities; establishing clear goals and implementation strategies for both short and long term.
    • Identify, build and implement event and volunteer programming that aligns directly with UWMD’s community impact strategies and programs while moving observers to doers to donors and driving revenue towards shared fundraising goals.
    • Develop a strategy for and oversee the organization’s hallmark volunteer engagement projects, currently referred to as Unite for Change, including the stewardship of corporations and individuals supporting the initiative.
    • Create, implement, and analyze effective programming to position UWMD programs as solutions for employee engagement with our corporate partners.
    • Build and execute volunteer engagement strategy that incorporates a full suite of year-round engagement opportunities that serves the business needs of corporate clients and the needs of the community, while aligning with and supporting the UWMD mission and vision.
    • Continue to engage existing and new donor communities through UWMD’s events and engagements, and align strategy to demonstrate revenue generation from all donor channels.
    • Ability to identify and capitalize on strategic points for philanthropic engagement
    • Strong verbal communications skills and interpersonal skills, including the ability to speak publicly and work effectively as a member of a team.
    • Communicates effectively and with passion “the story” of the organization’s work to engage donors, volunteers, and advocates.
    • Partner with the Vice President of Donor Relations to develop the right engagement strategies for our donors and members of UWMD’s giving societies.

     

    Internal Management

    • Ability to provide thought leadership on UWMD work both within and outside of UWMD.
    • Develop and retain a high-caliber staff to ensure the goals of the organization are achieved in the most cost efficient, professional manner; assist with the development of rigorous objectives that drive high performance.
    • Help build an environment of open communication with staff members.
    • Help establish a high level of professionalism across the department.
    • Oversee the preparation of reports and ccollateral materials for events and programs.
    • Establish, communicate, and maintain Departmental and organization-wide policies and procedures related to engagement and event strategies and responsibilities.
    • Execute and oversee event and engagement in a fiscally responsible way.  Follow internal control policies, work with preferred vendors, identify in-kind partnerships for reducing pricing, and track and utilize surplus supplies and materials for like-initiatives.
    • Develop and execute an overall program/project management, operational, and change management strategy around business initiatives/processes by utilizing proven methodologies and working across the organization to implement.
    • Create leadership dashboards and reporting cadence to swiftly track Department’s overall performance.
    • Ensure the CRM (Salesforce) is utilized to support account management to capture and track all donor and prospect activities.
    • Manage the operating budget for the events and volunteer engagement teams, including project budgets and tracking throughout the fiscal year; with a goal of achieving cost savings.  
    • Continually evaluate the return on investment and strategic alignment of events and volunteer engagement programs with the overall organization’s strategies and goals.
    • Develops relationships, both internally and externally, to enhance and contribute to organizational effectiveness.
    • Excellent project management skills and the ability to chart one’s own direction collaboratively.
    • Desire to help others achieve their goals by sharing ideas, time and resources.

     

     

    Qualifications

    • A bachelor’s degree.
    • Key competencies include: strategic relationship building, outward turning focus, mission focused, brand steward, embracing and managing change, entrepreneurial and innovative, collaborative.
    • A minimum of 10 years of work experience, preferably in project management, event planning or production, strategy oversight, fundraising, as well as volunteer engagement management.
    • Ability to build volunteer opportunities out of UWMD initiatives and products that will provide solutions for corporate partner goals (be a business solution for our corporate partners) and meet the needs of the target population.
    • Strong executive presence and interpersonal skills.
    • Innovative, creative and strong interest in executing new strategies to exceed revenue and engagement goals.
    • Proficiency translating data and analytics into actionable insights.
    • Solid understanding and curiosity for emerging analytics techniques and how they translate into actionable insights for corporate engagement.
    • Ability to leverage technology to achieve goals and optimize growth.
    • Demonstrated experience in managing corporate partnerships, including planning, implementation and account management.
    • Excellent writing, editing, verbal, and presentation skills.
    • Superior organizational skills with high attention to detail.
    • Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel; working knowledge of social media; competency utilizing a CRM to track prospect interactions.
    • Demonstrated skill and comfort in building relationships with board members, major donors, corporate executives, and government and community agency leaders.
    • Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and results.
    • Superior management and problem-solving skills, including the ability to advocate for and manage to budget priorities.
    • Presence and confidence to project credibility to the Board and other strategic stakeholders.
    • A passion for UWMD’s mission, vision and community goals.

    ADDITIONAL

    • Ability to work some evenings and weekends, as required by event timing.
    • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
    • Access to reliable transportation.
